I’m not ashamed to let it be known that I shop in plus size stores. Okay, so I do like plenty of brands and chains perfectly well, but plus size stores tend to sell clothes that fits me most of the time. Some notable exceptions included skinny leg (no stretch) jeans and dresses which are too roomy at the top but too small at the bottom.
The trouble kind of is that I’m anywhere between a size generous size 14 and a 20. So often I’ll go to buy jeans and be told ‘No, you can’t be a size 20 in our store’, only to prove them wrong. Thunder thighs, you’ll be the death of me yet.
And sometimes I don’t know where I really belong. In City Chic, I mostly buy extra small tops (14–16ish) and half the time they don’t look right. In Big W the other day I found some cool pop culture tees. The 3XL tee, which had a square graphic, well, it didn’t look like a square graphic after I put it on.
And, worst of all, some plus size clothes — okay, a lot of them — are kind of the worst.
The tops are long. They pretty much cover your bum, and let’s face it, when your bum is a huge asset, you don’t want something to hide it, it’s like an elephant hiding between a very small tree. It looks silly.
The jeans make almost no sense. I’ve tried biker jeans (I’m too short for them), I’ve tried skinny jeans (they don’t get much further than my well toned calf muscles), I’ve tried jeans with holes in them (someone explain this to me), I’ve tried a regular bootleg that is too big in the waist but perfect in the legs.
The clothes kind of all look the same. One store has diagonally shaped hems — on every skirt, tunic or top. Many stores have slightly off focus floral prints. The straps tend to be super wide, or held up with those weird choker strap things that are supposed to look sexy. There is a hell of a lot of black. Other times they like to be in style, so one of my active wear tops has sleeve holes which are cut very low, halfway down the top. Despite the fact that this makes wearing the tank kind of cold — presumably to wear with a crop top — I guess you have to give them credit for trying to keep up with trends… on the other hand, I’m a size 20 woman, no one wants to see side boob.
Target, Big W and Kmart aren’t really that helpful. Sometimes Belle Curve (Target) seem to do a rip off of a City Chic style and they often try to be on trend, but I do find it hard to find flattering items there. Big W and Kmart don’t have a huge range either, but at least it’s an option.
Having said all that, I am an email subscriber to several fashion stores now. I like knowing what’s in, what’s not, and what I can make work for me. I have a pretty large wardrobe, and usually I can find something that’s currently in just by searching through the contents of my wardrobe.
Why the whinge though?
Well, not really a whinge, I just wanted to express my love, utter confusion and perplexed facial expressions I have when buying from plus size stores.
